Abstract In the exploration of the coal goaf, shallow earthquakes can be regarded as one of the preferred geophysical methods. Its advantages such as high resolution and good detection results have been widely used in goaf detection, and its superiority is especially obvious in the exploration of multi-layer goaf; nevertheless, its high requirement in field work and difficult data processing as compared with other geophysical methods should be given much careful and prudent attention. Based on previous achievements, the authors present some personal opinions concerning the field acquisition technique and data processing and interpretation of this method.
