Abstract This paper deals with an example of detecting coal mine goaf by using controllable source audio magnetic technique (CSAMT). The following aspects are discussed:the working principle of CSAMT,the geophysical premise of detecting coal mine goaf, the equipment and its parameter setting, the working field layout and the data analysis. The result of the study was verified by drilling. Drilling verification shows that the detecting result is coincident with the coal mine goaf. It is thus held that the CSAMT is effective in detecting coal mine goaf.
