Abstract  With the support of GIS technique, the land use information was obtained by interpreting the remote sensing images in 1985 and 2000, and the spatial process of the study area in the past 15 years was revealed. Then, based on the historical data, the human factor was employed to analyze the driving force. Some conclusions can be drawn: (a) the land use pattern is between the agriculture land use class and the urban land use class, and the general transformation characteristics are from the non-urban land use type to the urban land use type; (b)under the favorable policy formulated by the central and local governments, the main driving forces can play an important role in the land use change in Shanghai City.
