Abstract Based on the black and white aerial photos of 1983, color infrared aerial photos of 1992 and the JERS-1/VNIR image of 1996, the vegetation type maps of Yingbazha, the middle reaches of the Tarim River Basin of Xinjiang Province, are made, supported by ARC/INFO software, the changes of vegetation area and distribution condition are analysed. As a result, the natural and artificial factors affected vegetation changes are indicated. Furthermore, the advantages of RS and GIS techniques integrate to study vegetation changes are showed.
