Abstract Using fractal theory, this paper analyses land types of Nanji Island. The complexity, fragmental degree and shape property of the polygons are described quantitatively by means of fractal dimensions and shape parameters. The results show that the fractal dimensions of the shrubbery and the meadow are very large while the fractal dimensions of the bleachery, the village and the farmland are relatively small. This indicates that the fractal dimensions are related to human activities.
