Abstract  Located in the middle-upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the Dongting Lake is the second largest fresh- water lake in China. In recent years, flood damage has occurred very frequently, and seriously threatened people's life and property. Through computer interpretation and area calculation based on TM images from eight different times, the area and volume of the lake were estimated and the mathematical equation of the area-level and volume-level were established. With this equation, the regulating and storing capacity of the lake was evaluated, and the results prove to be satisfactory and are of great significance in reducing damage and controlling flood.
