Abstract The author briefly describes the advances in the use of airborne thermal infrared remote sensing techniques in geothermal surveying and the optimal application conditions. Examples presented in the paper demonstrate the usefulness of such techniques in geothermal surveying and their promise for the future. The potential and limitations of the techniques are discussed in detail. The author emphasizes the importance of scanning conditions in obtaining good results.
