Abstract Abstract In this paper, a complete set of digital mosaicking methods developed for the technical problems in mosaicking multi-scenes of remote sensing images acquired in different temporal is presented. In order to eliminate the mosaicking seam caused by tone difference between the adjacent images to be mosaicked, the techniques including gray-level adjustment through histogram matching progressively, detection of the optimum mosaicking point using a sliding window, and gray-level smoothing with the help of weighting on both sides of the mosaicking point are adopted. To improve the geometric accuracy of mosaicking, control points are selected in the overlapping area of the two images so that the mosaicking can be carried out by tracing the control points. And the unitmosaicking approach is used so as to realize the mosaicking of huge volume of data on a small computer system. Based on the techniques mentioned above and corresponding software developed by the authors, the mosaic images of many regions, say, the Middle and Lower Reaches of Yangtse River, are produced successfully, and the images have won high praises from the users.
