Abstract The signatures of different vegetation spectra are discussed on the basis of geochemical survey in Suzhou urban area. Three typical vegetations were used, namely amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus L), soybean (Glycine max) and cowbean (Vigna cylindrica L.). The results show that soil contamination mainly affects vegetation spectra through altering spectral reflectance in the visible (green) wave band and shifting the red edge to blue, and that amaranth seems to be a sensible vegetation in environment pollution monitoring.
